If you want to enlarge a photo and you are using a digital camera, you must shoot at the highest resolution to obtain the best results. The larger the size of your file the bigger the print and the better the detail.

Here is a 'rough/approximate' guideline for image sizes, keep in mind that digital images will be different and all files will not produce the same results.

Customers often ask what resolution should their picture be to enlarge. Ideally we like to print at 300 DPI, we think it produces the best prints. We can also print at higher resolutions to meet the demands of artists and professionals. There is often confusion associated with DPI and what it means. DPI or dots per inch is used to describe the resolution number of dots per inch in a digital print. Printers with higher DPI produce clearer and more detailed output. PPI on the other hand refers to the number of pixels per inch in a file. One pixel will contain four or more dots.

Check your digital camera settings before shooting

A digital camera's user interface will provide all the information about a photo, usually the pixel dimensions, the resolution and the file size. Image viewing software will also provide the same info on any computer (PC or MAC). The size of the image is obtained by dividing the pixel dimension by the resolution. For example an image with a dimension of 4000 x 3000 pixels at a resolution of 300 is 13.33 x 10 inches. Interpolation or resampling is used to boost the image size and resolution but in the case of small files the result would be jagged edges and pixels showing in the print. A 72 PPI file usually used for web images is too low for printing.

Digital photographs are easier to enlarge as opposed to scanned images which will have dots when they are enlarged because of the inherent film grain. A well exposed image will produce better prints than a poor one. A small resolution image will not print well no matter what software and hardware is used. It is not possible to make an image sharper or well exposed if it wasn't already so in the original state. Giclee printing in particular is demanding because professional grade nozzles are not very forgiving of low resolution files.

Monitor Display Color & Output Color

Why isn't the image I had printed look like the one I saw on my monitor? All computer monitors are different. They all have different resolutions and use transmitted light to display a low resolution image very well. Monitors have the ability to produce a broader spectrum of colors as opposed to printers which are limited to the number of cartridges of primary colors that are used to blend different colors.
